DeRantau Nomad Visa

Basics

  1. DeRantau visa allows you stay 1 year in Peninsular Malaysia, renewable for another year.
    1. Which means you cannot stay past 90 days in East Malaysian states i.e. Sabah & Sarawak, you can enter those states under the usual social visit pass.
  2. As a result of spending > 182 days in Malaysia, you are liable to file tax returns with the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, and pay them, if:-
    1. Your income tax is calculated to be higher than the country you are already paying income tax to. For example, you are paying Mordor about RM 14,000 of tax, but you are supposed to pay RM 20,000 of income tax to Malaysia; you may get RM 14,000 as tax credit and end up paying just RM 6,000 of tax.
    2. You have not been paying income tax to any other country.
  3. MDEC (the government agency that runs DeRantau) seriously hates applications thru agents, we have heard agents withholding passports for longer than people expected and causing overstays. Do not engage any agent!

Whatever I wrote here is just my hunch, I am not a visa and tax professional, please consult real professionals and IRBM/LHDN officers for final verdicts.

Banking

As of 2025, from other DeRantau holders' input in our Telegram group's Banking topic, one will likely have better luck with these banks:

  1. Alliance Bank

These banks are no good:

  1. Maybank
  2. HSBC
  3. CIMB

Again, your miles may vary.
